Movimiento
APICULTURAL
(MA)
El
Movimiento APICULTURAL
es un proyecto de
difusión y mediación
cultural entre: ARTE,
APICULTURA, CIENCIA y
MEDIO AMBIENTE.
Son
los propios gestores de
la cultura, los que
después de un acto
profundamente reflexivo
y apuntando hacia el
bien común, participan
en el desarrollo de
ideas u obras creativas,
causando impacto en el
universo social.
El
Movimiento APICULTURAL
relaciona Arte, Ciencia,
Apicultura y Medio
Ambiente. Promueve
instrucción y genera
iniciativas a partir del
contacto con el tema de
las abejas. Da a conocer
la apicultura en la
comunidad artística,
científica y cultural
del país, utilizando la
apicultura como una
llave que nos conecta
íntimamente con el mundo
natural y así comprender
o vislumbrar, otra
dimensión de contacto
con el medio ambiente,
una nueva forma de
relacionarnos con el
entorno ecológico.
A través de las obras
creadas e inspiradas a
partir del conocimiento
de la apicultura y su
relación con el medio
ambiente, social y
natural, se realizan una
serie de actividades
culturales, generando
interés en el resto de
la comunidad: Colegios,
Universidades, Centros
Culturales, etc.
El MA se ha proyectado a
largo plazo, 2005-2010,
pretendiendo llegar como
un proyecto realizado al
bicentenario.
Comenzó modestamente con
las primeras
convocatorias a gestores
culturales, artistas y
científicos que se
interesen en participar
de esta iniciativa.
Unidos

El
Movimiento
APICULTURAL
hace
posible la difusión de
la apicultura, la
ciencia y el cuidado del
medio ambiente, a través
del arte, en todas sus
manifestaciones.
El MA,
además de
fomentar las
buenas prácticas
apícolas y la
proliferación y
resguardo de la flora
nativa y toda la
biodiversidad que en
ella se recrea,
se plantea como un
movimiento
interdisciplinario que
busca afianzar la unión
de nuestra identidad
cultural con el
cuidado
del entorno natural
inmediato, dando
forma a una “imagen
país” culta y respetuosa
del medio ambiente.
Este
movimiento cultural,
toma como base una
visión orgánica y
sustentable de la
apicultura, la ciencia y
el arte. Trasciende los
temas e intereses
particulares y mezquinos
de algún tipo de
actividad, pues su fin
último es:
Tener una
relación de respeto y
conciencia por la
biodiversidad y medio
ambiente social y
natural al que
pertenecemos.
Se invita a UD. y su
empresa, universidad o
institución a participar
de este movimiento de
educación y difusión
nacional e
internacional, que une
los gestores del mundo
del arte y ciencia con
los de la apicultura.

Synthesis
of the project
APICULTURAL
MOVEMENT
DESCRIPTION
"Cultural agents[1]
are those who, by means
of their artwork,
provoke an impact in the
social universe."
The Apicultural Movement
is an initiative whose
goal is to create a
relationship between
Arte, Apiculture[2] and
the Environment,
generating interest and
promoting knowledge
among Chileans about the
way beekeeping works and
the major social and
economic benefits that
bees and their
activities provide us.
The project’s target
audiences will learn
more about beekeeping
and its important
contribution to the
natural world as they
participate in the
various planned
activities. By visiting
each of the project’s
exhibitions, they will
become sensitized about
and learn the importance
of Apiculture.
The project also aims to
stimulate an increase in
sales of Chilean bee
products in the domestic
market, thanks to
greater knowledge and
interest generated by
the project, and in
foreign markets through
participation in
international fairs and
sustained contact with
specialized press in
order to project an
image of Chile as a
country highly
privileged in production
of honey.
BACKGROUND AND
JUSTIFICATION
A small insect, the
honeybee, whose
scientific name is Apis
melífera, creates the
most energetic food on
the planet: honey. "The
living juice," the
flower’s mature nectar,
the sweet substance that
nurtures, as it is, in
its majority,
constituted of
predigested sugars like
fructose (40%) and
glucose (35%), it can be
used almost
instantaneously by our
organism. Besides being
composed of essential
vitamins and trace
elements, it contains
natural antibiotics that
the bee provides during
its preparation.
Honey is one of the
bee’s most popular
products, but even more
abundant and sometimes
ignored is the process
of pollination, since
the bee is one of
nature’s best
pollinators. Most
farmers never forget
about bees and their
prodigious fertilization,
since it is the bees’
efficient collection of
pollen and nectar that
fertilizes the flowers
and guarantees an
abundant harvest. This
is why farmers say, "if
there are no bees, there
is no harvest."
Another of its
unparalleled products in
terms of complexity and
completeness is royal
jelly or bee’s milk. A
worker bee who eats
honey and pollen can
live between 3 and 6
months, while a queen
bee, who eats a balanced
mixture of pollen, honey,
and royal jelly, can
live up to 7 years.
We also have the highly-valued
propolis, a natural
antibiotic and highly
powerful anesthetic;
apitoxin or venom, which
is an excellent way to
cure problems related to
rheumatisms and is used
in "apitherapy"[3]
sessions; beeswax, the
bee’s natural secretion
which is used for
constructing cells and
honeycombs; and pollen,
a high-quality vegetable
protein.
Thus, we have a total of
seven products, which
are a result of bees’
natural diligence. Bees
create, reproduce, and
collect these products
in a way, quantity, and
quality that would be
impossible for us.
For all of these reasons,
the honeybee is one of
the insects that
promotes the highest
degree of abundance on
the planet.
For our own satisfaction,
and thanks to beekeeping,
we can come into contact
with and benefit from
the fascinating world of
honeybees. Without
beekeeping and
beekeepers, bees would
clearly be at risk of
extinction given the
current environmental
conditions, and this
would directly cause a
decrease in our quality
of life.
Starting in 1992, the
Varroa disease arrived
in Chile, crossing
natural barriers as a
result of irresponsible
transhumances. Varroa is
a mite that has
decimated more than 50%
of the country’s
beehives. This situation,
along with the
indiscriminate
depredation of
ecosystems that keeps
honeybees from optimally
generating natural
immunities, and the
contamination with
agrochemicals, all mean
that the bee’s existence
depends on the care they
receive from beekeepers.
GENERAL OBJECTIVES
The Apicultural Movement
aims to:
-
Create links between
beekeeping
activities and
know-how, and the
country’s artistic
and cultural
community to
generate a space for
reflection, action,
and education.
-
Provide information
to the community
about the products
produced by bees,
their properties and
benefits for human
health. Above all,
inform the community
about the highly
important activities
and relationships
honeybees establish
with their natural
surroundings and
with people by
carrying out
pollination.
-
Help
make apiculture, art
and care of the
environment part of
the general culture
of the Chilean
population and
project this image
in foreign countries,
thus creating an "image
of a country" based
on real content.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
-
Generate a union of
wills, skills, and
professions[4],
creating a numerous
and select group of
active participants
who, using all types
of environments and
disciplines, promote
a heightened
consciousness among
citizens by
providing
information about
apiculture and the
vital importance of
reestablishing the
natural equilibrium
that has been
destroyed by an
indiscriminate
depredation of
ecosystems.
-
Encourage the
creation of artwork
by artists and
cultural agents by
providing them with
information about
beekeeping.
-
Hold
permanent and
itinerant
expositions with the
artwork created by
the Movement and
open these shows to
members of a varied
public.[5]
-
Design a
communicational
strategy[6] with a
group of
professionals from
varied disciplines
in order to evaluate
and perfect
Apicultural
Movement’s central
strategy.
-
Accomplish as a
product a multimedia
itinerant module
that represents us
as the "image of a
country" in the
coming apiculture
symposiums and fairs,
both in Chile and
abroad.
-
Provide information
to the general
public about
apiculture that
encourages a
valuation and
promotion of
reforestation and
conservation of
native flora,
especially in areas
where beehives will
be placed.[7]
Stimulate an
increased interest
in consuming
apiculture products.[8]
PROJECT BENEFICIARIES
The Apicultural Movement
will provide information,
know-how, and education
to the community in
general, while taking
into account the
cultural, social, and
age characteristics of
each target group. Thus,
we can define possible
beneficiaries of this
project as:
-
GRAMMAR SCHOOL
COMMUNITIES:
Includes teachers,
students, and
parents and
guardians from
diverse lower and
middle schools
around the country.
-
LOCAL
COMMUNITIES:
Includes urban and
rural communities as
organized in
neighborhoods,
shantytowns,
municipalities,
sectors, housing
projects, plazas,
cultural centers,
etc.
-
SOCIAL ORGANIZATIONS:
Like for example
neighborhood
organizations, youth
organizations,
senior citizen clubs.
-
UNIVERSITY
COMMUNITIES:
Includes professors
and students from
public and private
higher educational
establishments
around the country.
It is
also important to
mention that other
direct beneficiaries of
this project are:
-
THE
BEEKEEPING COMMUNITY:
Both beekeepers and
their family will
benefit from this
project by having a
real space for
promoting their
activities, which
can certainly
include sale of
their products, and
therefore lead to an
improvement in their
quality of life.
-
ARTISTS AND CULTURAL
AGENTS: This group
will have a space
for creativity,
social-artistic
intervention, and
retro alimentation
with the public.
PROJECT’S DURATION
The Apicultural Movement
is a long-term project,
aware that it will take
a significant amount of
time to fulfill all the
above-mentioned
objectives. The first
public exposition will
be in March 2006 and the
project’s stages will be
carried out until 2010.
METHODOLOGICAL
CONSIDERATIONS
The Apicultural Movement
bases its methodological
strategy on providing
information and
education in a way that
is playful, didactic,
artistic, reflexive, and
comprehensible for all
types of public, since
the diverse social,
cultural, and age
characteristics of each
target group must be
taken into account. In
this way, special care
will be taken in using
appropriate language
that is explicatory and
friendly and that calls
the public’s attention
while at the same time
providing information
and helping it to be
retained. This is how
the Apicultural Movement
will achieve a lasting
impact in the population.
Another consideration is
that the invitation for
artistic creation will
be opened to all
creators, artists, and
cultural agents who
demonstrate a real
commitment to the
Apicultural Movement.
This is how the quality
of individual works and
expositions in general
will be maintained
throughout the project’s
duration.
-
Cultural agents are
those who, after a
profoundly reflexive
exercise that aims
at a common good,
participate in
developing creative
actions, ideas, or
works.
-
Apiculture: the art
of raising honeybees
and using their
products.
-
Although this
includes use of all
the beehive’s
products.
-
For
example: publicists,
musicians, designers,
journalists,
teachers, artists,
beekeepers, etc.
-
Schools,
universities, local
communities, etc.
-
Which
could, for example,
become a television
program, or an image
that is catchy
enough to enter the
population’s
subconscious, or a
radio jingle, etc.
-
Monocultures are a
way to grow products
in quantities, but
not in the quality
that is needed. They
aren’t the most
flavorful or the
healthiest. Their
production is linked
with depredation and
contamination by
agrochemicals. It is
necessary to
understand the
concept of organic
as an ecological way
of crop management,
and as a legal
resource to protect
us.
-
In
the case of honey,
annual per capita
consumption is 80
grams.
